World Translation Day | Trivia of the Day
Today's Story: World Translation Day, the day is celebrated to mark the importance of different languages and to show the growth in the profession of translator.
The Day is a tribute to Saint Jerome the Bible translator who is considered the patron saint of translators. The celebrations have been promoted by the International Federation of Translators (FIT) ever since it was set up in 1953. Not many see translator as a profession and many of them don't even know about it. So, the day was declared in the year 2017.
Every year the day follows a theme and gives a message to the young ones. The theme of this year is “Finding The Words For A World In Crisis”.
How do I become a certified translator in India or any other country?
The first thing you got to do is look for a professional translation organization or you may call it a language course. These organizations have members that have already gone through what you're looking to do. They know the market, the good, the bad and the ugly.
Interesting stuff About Languages in India
• The People's Linguistic Survey of India (PLSI) counted 780 Indian languages in 2010.
• Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Orissa, Bengal and Rajasthan have the most languages.
• India publishes newspapers in 35 languages.
• Hindi is India's most used language, spoken by 40% of Indians. This is followed by Bengali (8.0%), Telugu (7.1%), Marathi (6.9%), and Tamil (5.9%).
• The state-run All India Radio (AIR) broadcasts programmes in 120 languages.
• Only 4% of languages are represented in India's parliament.
Interesting Fact: In India, There is a man who teaches English in Gujarat for more than 9 years who found 780 languages in India. The teacher himself has published articles in 11 tribal languages. In 18 months he discovered that some 16 languages are spoken in the state Himachal Pradesh, a dozen villages, not far from the state Mumbai, speaks an "outdated" form of Portuguese And some Indians living in Gujarat speak in Japanese. Indians, he found, spoke some 125 foreign languages as their mother tongue.
