World Heart Day | Food For A Healthy Heart

Today's Story: World Heart Day, the day is celebrated since 1999 to raise awareness about treatment and prevention of cardiovascular diseases. 


The team behind the day is World Heart Federation [WHF] and World Health Organization [WHO] who decided to establish the day. Heart diseases like Cardiac Arrest, High Blood Pressure, Blood Clots are some common diseases people deal with every day. According to a report by Global Burden of Diseases, 1.7 million Indians die because of coronary heart ailment out of the world's 17.3 million deaths. Wonder What causes heart diseases? The answer to this is High competition in students, long working job hours lead to increase factors like Burden, Diabetes, Blood Pressure etc.

Food for a Healthy Heart

Diet plays a major role in heart's health and can decrease the risk of heart disease.  

• Try to add Food like Oatmeal, Broccoli, Tomatoes, Garlic, Olive Oil, Walnuts, Almonds, Beans, Dark Chocolate, Green Tea in your diet. 

• Berries (Strawberries, Raspberries, Blueberries, Blackberries) they are filled with nutrients and are also rich in antioxidants which reduce stress. Try adding it on your diet list.

• Avocados are high in monounsaturated fat and potassium. They can help lower cholesterol and blood pressure.

• Fresh Fruits - wash the fruits before eating and try to not eat frozen fruits from your refrigerator. You may keep your fruits in the kitchen. 

• Choose recipes that have vegetables or fruits as the main ingredients, such as vegetable stir-fry or fresh fruit mixed into salads. 

Other than the list above, first, you should take care of a proper diet which includes every nutrient in your meal i.e., A Balanced Diet. How much you eat is as important as what you eat. Overloading your plate is not what I mean, eat until you're stuffed is not what we have to do. Eat until your plate is empty, use a short plate to reduce the portion of your food. This technique can make your heart healthy and shape your waist size. 

In addition to eating a healthy diet, there are certain habits that will help you in maintaining a healthy heart like Walking, Cycling, Exercise and Swimming. Easiest of them all is to walk, Experts say a person who walks 30 minutes a day may never experience heart disease in their lifetime.
