POPULAR INDIAN LIBRARIES 

India stands on the third place in the list of the largest number of public libraries which explains why Indian libraries need your attention. Let us know some of the libraries you must visit while in India. 

Although, India has over 5 thousand libraries but some of them are remarkable. Here are they:


• The National Library of India, West Bengal

It is the biggest library of India, designated in the small city Kolkata, West Bengal. The library contains overall 2.2 million books in its collection and has made several records. The library was established in the year 1836 (as Calcutta Public Library), 30 January 1903 (as Imperial Library), 1 February 1953 (as National Library of India). 


• State Central Library, Kerala

Established at the start of the 18th century, the library is a stopping point for the visitors of Kerala capital Thiruvananthapuram. The library was made during the time of British India by the king Swathi Thirunal of Travancore. Back then it was called Trivandrum People’s Library. 


• Raza Library, Uttar Pradesh 

Located at Rampur in the Indian city Uttar Pradesh. The library is set in the last decades of the 18th century and is home to 30 thousand books. What made the library unique is it contains manuscripts, historical event books, Islamic calligraphy, rare illustrations of Arabic, Persian etc. Other than that religious language books are also available such as Turkish, Arabic, Pashto, Hindi, Sanskrit, Urdu etc.


• Nehru Memorial Museum & Library, New Delhi

Established in 1964, the library is made after India's first Prime Minister Jawahar Lal Nehru. Currently, It is the world's leading resource centre of Nehru. The library contains private papers of Sarojini Naidu, B. C. Roy and the bulk of Mahatma Gandhi's writings.

• Library of Congress 

Library of Congress is the largest library in the United States and world. It is the oldest federal cultural institution of the United States set in the 18th century. The institution is home to millions of books, maps, newspapers, manuscripts apart from that 450 plus different language books.  

• New York Public Library 


New York Public Library is a late 80's establishment and like Library of Congress, it is also tourists attraction. The book house consists of over 50 million books from all around the world and has 90 plus branches of its own. 

• National Library of France 

Bibliothèque Nationale de France is the original name of the library located in Paris, France. The library holds all the important historical documents and is the largest library of the country. With 14 million-plus books in the library, it is a famous tourists spot in Paris. 

• Library of the Russian Academy of Sciences

In Russia, the name is Biblioteka Akademii Nauk. Set in the 17th century, the library is the largest in the country. The library suffered the most catastrophic fire in its history which destroyed 300,000 collections of books. Most of the lost books were foreign scientific works. 

• National Diet Library, Japan

National Diet Library is a 1948 established national library of the country Japan. The main purpose of the library is similar to the scope and purpose of the Library of Congress. Over 27 branches and 40 Million plus books are found in the library.
