In this blog, you will know how & when Seven Wonders of the world became a thing. Firstly you should know what monuments are included in this list. 


The Seven Wonders of the World 


1. Great Wall of ChinaThe official length of the monument is 21,196.18 km. It is said that the great wall of China is two thousand and three hundred years old. Experts say nearly 1/3 of the Great Wall has disappeared without trace. In December 1987, the Great Wall was placed on the World Heritage List by UNESCO.


2. Petra, Ma'an, Jordan - Petra is also known as rose city due to its rocks which take on a pink view at sunrise and sunsets. It is Jordan's most visited tourist place as it is included in UNESCO's world Heritage Site as well as Seven Wonders of the World. 


3. Colosseum, Rome, Italy - The Colosseum is the largest amphitheater in the world. It measures 189m long, 156m wide and 50m in height. In the early days, two-thirds of the monument has been destroyed by the natural calamities. 


4. Chichen Itza, Yucatán, México - The name "Chichen Itza" means "At the mouth of the well of the Itza." It is one of the most visited archaeological sites in Mexico with over 2.6 million tourists in 2017. It is awarded as UNESCO's World Heritage Site as well as included in Seven Wonders.



5. Machu Picchu, Peru -  Over 7000 feet above sea level in the Andes Mountains, “Machu Picchu” means “Old Peak” or “Old Mountain.” It was declared a Peruvian Historic Sanctuary in 1981 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983. In 2007, Machu Picchu was voted one of the new Seven Wonders of the World. 



6. Taj Mahal, India - Ivory-white marble mausoleum on the southern bank of the river Yamuna in the Indian city of Agra. It is a token of love by the Emperor Shahjahan for his late  wife Mumtaj Mahal. The Taj Mahal was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983 for being one of the universally admired masterpieces of the world's heritage. 



7. Christ the Redeemer, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil - Made of Soapstone, the monument weights 635 metric tons. A symbol of Christianity across the world, the statue has also become a cultural icon of both Rio de Janeiro and Brazil, and is listed among Seven Wonders of the World.

Ans. In the year late of 1999, A campaign started called ''New Seven Wonders of the World'' by a Swiss adventurer Bernard Weber. It is said that almost 200 nominations came from all around the globe. 



Q. Who supported the campaign? 

Ans. United Nation came out to support the campaign in early 2001 after the urge of New Seven Wonders Foundation. 



Q. How the Seven Wonders were chosen?

Ans. The Swiss adventurer started online and telephone voting which was organized by New Seven Wonders Foundation and the polls were free and reachable for normal public. Many called the voting unfair and unscientific since people could vote multiple times.


Q. When were the poll's results announced? 

Ans. The Foundation New Seven Wonders announced the results after 7 years on the date 7 July 2007 in Lisbon, Portugal. After the announcement, the foundation disclosed that more than ten million people voted. 


Q. Who were the finalists?

Ans. Twenty were selected as finalists out of which seven were declared as winners. The other thirteen finalists were (chronologically) Stonehenge, United Kingdom; Acropolis of Athens, Greece; Hagia Sophia, Turkey; Angkor Wat, Cambodia; Moai, Chile; Timbuktu, Mali; Alhambra, Spain; Red Square, Russia; Kiyomizu-dera, Japan; Neuschwanstein, Germany; Statue of Liberty, United States; Eiffel Tower, France; Sydney Opera House, Australia.
