Global Handwashing Day 2020

Today's History - This day in the year 2008 was registered as Global Handwashing Day by the UNGA (United Nations General Assembly) and has been celebrated even since. In addition, this year's theme is "Hand Hygiene For All."

The Day has a logo which depicts water, soap and a Hand supporting hygiene. Global Handwashing Day is a campaign initiated by Global Handwashing Partnership (GHP) in august 2008 at the annual world water week in Stockholm, Sweden. The day was registered to raise awareness about washing hands with soap. According to a study by Michigan State University, 5% of the population does not wash their hands properly.

The Centres for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) says it takes 15 to 20 seconds of vigorous handwashing with soap and water to effectively kill germs yet on an average people wash their hands for 6 seconds. The day makes much more sense this year as the main reason for COVID Pandemic is lack of Hygiene. Many countries have been vocal about washing hands with soap, using sanitizer and maintaining hygiene in society.

How many times should you wash your hands in a day?

You should wash hands at least 6 to 10 times on a regular day but nowadays, make it 15 times.

Does COVID Pandemic make you an OCD patient?

The question is popular as people don't have an answer to it. Firstly, you should know what is OCD? Patients with compulsive hand washing perform excessive and repetitive washing of their hands in an attempt to relieve irrational fears of contamination. These patients are known for having OCD (obsessive-compulsive disorder). The answer to the above question is No, washing hands in a covid pandemic will not make you an OCD patient.

The day aims to foster and support a general culture of handwashing with soap in all societies so let us all try maintaining hygiene even after this virus. Comment what you have done to maintain hygiene in your society:)
